Man’s Best Friend, Man’s Best Enemy

I. The Great Falls of the Potomac

1.

At the edge of a cliff

MJ feels no danger.

With one more step, a bark

turns frantic. Her Coco

jumps to her top-rope, flush

with the void. It skips, her heart.

2.

Does her dog act from her heart?

To force MJ from the cliff,

thirty pounds of Coco

leaps on MJ’s back. A bark,

a shove, a whine. Danger

fades, though M J’s face is flush.

II.

It’s Only Hubris If I fail.

Julius Caesar

3.

I too am feeling flush

with angst and pounding heart,

unsteady on a cliff

greasy with fraud. No Coco

to warn me with her bark

of Trumpian danger.

4.

Our nation’s in danger

from Biden’s choked debate. No flush

of his passionate heart

will save us from this cliff.

Where’s  my strong Coco

with political bark?

5.

The Donald fears a bark,

losing face his danger,

a frayed rope on a cliff,

an attack dog’s brave heart,

a snarl that makes him flush

like a jailbird.  Coco

6.

yelps, fearless Coco.

No indictments, just a bark

alerting us to danger

from a con man flush

with crimes.  To scare Trump’s heart,

let him leap off the cliff.

Envoi:

Hubris is a cliff. Coco

warns of danger. Her bark

never fails to flush an evil, lying heart.
