How to Write a Poem

Circle La Maison Pond three times.

Soar  in search of your topic.

Hover, and wait for a word.

Plunge.

Splash.

Pierce.

Swim in the murky excitement.

Curl your talons and capture

your  poisson rouge  named  Maurice.

Blame him when your writing fails.

”You have gone too far this time!”

Pop your head up, labor to lift off.

Return to your poem’s nest.

Feed those who depend on you

—and don’t even know it yet—

so they too can one day fly.
