1.

Pedal!

Keep pushing pedals!

Whoomp! Owie! Her knee bleeds.

She cradles her blue bike, re-mounts.

Shoves off.

2.

W-o-b-b-l-e.

Handlebars lurch.

She pedals, looks ahead.

Her bike grips, flies. Helmeted hair

whooshes.

3.

Zig-zags,

he lunges, schusses,

vanishes in a dip

a plume of snow signals a crash.

Where’s Hervé?

4.

Pants flap

his jacket snaps

poles flail, he surfs the snow

somehow stops, hops the chairlift

smiling snowily.

5.

Slap slap

Splash kick kick thrash

Head up head down, she swims,

grabs the pool’s edge, gulping water.

Three strokes!

6.

Water,

Friend: when she floats.

Relaxed: she greets turtles.

Stretched: choreographed motion,

Snapper.

Flap flap

ooo-ah ooo-ah

Northern Gannet’s young wings

strain for their first cliff-top take-off:

Nothing.

8.

Fledglings

catch thermal drafts.

Birds with crowns washed with gold

ride the windy elevator.

Plunge deep.
